Democrat lawmakers escalated tensions at the Delaney Hall ICE detention facility in New Jersey after barging into the building without clearance, disrupting operations and clashing with federal agents.
On May 9, Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman, Rob Menendez, and LaMonica McIver joined Newark Mayor Ras Baraka in what ICE officials are calling a “politically charged stunt.” Baraka was arrested for trespassing after allegedly pushing past federal officers. According to DHS sources, more arrests may follow as video evidence shows physical contact initiated by one of the lawmakers.
“This was not a peaceful visit. It was a planned confrontation,” a Department of Homeland Security official told Fox News. “They forced entry into a federal facility, potentially putting everyone there at risk.”
The Delaney Hall facility houses criminal non-citizens, many of whom are facing charges ranging from child rape to murder. ICE officials say these aren’t families or asylum seekers but some of the most dangerous individuals in the system.
“The very people who want ICE defunded are now storming facilities that detain MS-13 gang members,” said Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH). “It’s disgusting and reckless.”
Baraka, currently running for governor, claims he was “targeted” and says ICE lacks proper permits to operate in Newark. However, DHS and city officials confirm all documentation is in order. “This was theater—plain and simple,” said a senior DHS legal advisor.
Fox News confirmed that no permits were missing, and that the facility has been operating in compliance with federal standards for over a decade. Officials say this isn’t the first time far-left lawmakers have disrupted ICE operations but is one of the most direct violations of federal protocol to date.
Democrats framed the incident as a “demand for transparency,” with Menendez claiming, “Our constituents deserve to know what happens inside.” But conservative analysts say it’s nothing more than a campaign stunt.
“It’s appalling how the left glorifies illegal immigration and criminalizes those enforcing the law,” said Tom Homan, former ICE Director. “ICE officers are being assaulted, and no one on the left is calling it out.”
Public outrage is growing, particularly among residents in law-abiding immigrant communities. “We came here legally. We followed the rules. And now we’re watching elected officials defend criminals,” said Newark resident and naturalized citizen Carla Mendez.
Calls are mounting for House leadership to launch an ethics investigation into the lawmakers involved. “This cannot be allowed to happen without consequences,” said Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY). “No one is above the law—not even Democrats.”
DHS has not ruled out federal charges. “We are reviewing all available footage,” said the ICE field director in New Jersey. “If any laws were broken, those involved will be held accountable.”
